Keeping pH Level in Balance

Your soil's pH level needs to be maintained between 6.0 and 7.0

Keeping your pH level well balanced is an important factor in the health of your lawn and in fostering a healthy turf ecosystem.  It also one of the easiest and least expensive treatments to accomplish.

Soil tends to become acidic from acid rainfall, watering with acidic water, fertilizer applications.

If the pH level is too acidic(below 6.0) or too alkaline(above 7.0) microorganism activity slows or even stops.  This will reduce the natural breakdown of organic matter and the consequential release of nitrogen and other nutrients.

Healthy lawn turf is vibrant and full of life.  Keeping the pH level balanced will make a good home for earthworms and microorganism that are nature's wonderful allies in maintaining a healthy lawn.

Soil should be tested with reliable testing instruments to determine the pH level.

Lime will raise the pH level.  Commonly available liming materials are dolomitic limestone, ground limestone, and pelletized limestone. Dolomitic limestone and ground limestone will offer a slower more gradual rate of pH change than pelletized limestone.  These materials are less hazardous and easier applied than burned lime and hydrated lime. Manufacturer label and instructions should be follow to determine application rates and handling specifics.
